How to Diagnose a Garbage Disposal Problem Before Calling

Press the reset button on the bottom of the unit
A tripped thermal overload is the most common reason a disposal goes silent. Locate the red or black reset button on the unit's underside, press it firmly until you feel a click, then test.

Use the hex-key port to free a jammed grind ring
Insert a 1/4-inch Allen key (usually included with the disposal) into the center port on the bottom. Turn back and forth to manually free the jam. Never put your hand in the drain.

Check the wall switch and circuit breaker
If the reset button doesn't fix it, verify the wall switch is good (swap a lamp into its outlet) and that the disposal's circuit breaker hasn't tripped.

Run cold water before, during, and after use
Cold water keeps grease solid so it can be ground and flushed. Running hot water melts grease and lets it re-solidify in the drain line — a common cause of chronic jams.

A disposal that hums without grinding means the motor is live but the grind ring is stuck or seized. If the hex-key trick doesn't free it, the impeller or motor may need replacement.
